Various types of these ‘invasion’ arm flags were worn by paratroopers in the course of the war. They were worn specifically by paratroopers to identify them as American forces because paratroopers would be dropped behind enemy lines and risked to be mistaken for Axis soldiers by the main US assault forces approaching them over land.
